Alaskan Razor Clams Make Wonderful Summer Fare

Succulent, flavorful, tender and protein rich are just four words that are often used to describe Alaskan razor clams. Because their flesh is so sweet and versatile, they tend to be coveted by foodies worldwide. Summer just also happens to be one of the best times to eat them.

Experienced fishermen will recognize the Alaskan razor clams by their yellowish brown, oblong exteriors and pearly white interiors. The long, luscious delights are typically harvested from several major areas located between the Bering Sea and Cook Inlet. The adults’ spawning behavior typically begins when the water temperature reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The Alaskan razor clams’ offspring then spend approximately 6 weeks at sea before burrowing into the sand. They typically remain there in depths of 4 to 30 feet above mean low water level. Harvest often takes place at low tide when the Alaskan razor clams are at least 4 years old.

However, one of the more popular options is to quickly pan fry the razor clams after they’ve been lightly coated with a mixture of Panko crumbs and flour. Because of the dish’s inherent sweetness, it tends to pair really well with a glass of Tokaji wine.

Those foodies that prefer a bit of spice sometimes season the tasty meat with a dash of cayenne pepper, sea salt and sweet paprika.
