Alaskan Halibut: The Prized Catch of The North

Alaskan Halibut: The Prized Catch of The North

There are many reasons Alaskan Halibut is widely considered “The Prized Catch of the North”, but the pearly white, firm, delicious meat is amongst the top. Tanner’s halibut is all 100% wild and fresh caught in the Gulf of Alaska, and delivered overnight right to our doorstep ready for an excellent meal.

What is Halibut?

Halibut is often given the nickname “Flat fish”, due to the fact that it is shaped like a flattened oval. With a white belly and an upper side that looks like a camouflage of the ocean floor, halibut are perfectly outfitted to dwell in the depths of the ocean. Halibut are actually part of the Flounder Family, and start their life “upright” like many other fish. In full maturity, halibut’s bodies adapt to their home on the sea floor, and both eyes move to the upper side of the body.

Halibut range in size like any other fish, but are the largest among flat fish. In full maturity, some halibut can weigh more than 400 pounds1.! Because of the size and the fact that halibut live in the depths of the ocean (they have been recorded to dwell at depths of 3,600 feet1. ), halibut really is a prize catch.

Fine Dining in Your Home

Many consider Alaskan Halibut to be the finest fish to eat in the world. Visually halibut makes for a stunning addition to the meal: the pristine, firm, pearly white meat is beautiful. The flavor is also unique: while it is mild, and some even describe as slightly sweet, it still has a distinct taste.

Because of the milder flavor, halibut is amazing as a stand-alone dish, or a perfect compliment to other flavors in a more involved recipe. The meat is thicker and firmer than some other white fish, so can be cooked with a multitude of methods. Perfect for the BBQ, deep fryer, skillet, or oven, halibut is a versatile and delicious option.

A Healthy Option for Your Table

Halibut is also an incredibly healthy protein source, made even more so by its diet and pristine habitat in Alaskan waters. High in healthy fats, and low in unhealthy saturated fats, it is an incredible option for the health conscious customer.  The nutrition profile says it all:
